Clock Tower
- The Clock Tower, or Uhrturm, is one of Graz’s most iconic landmarks, perched atop Schlossberg Hill and offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city. Dating back to the 13th century, the tower originally served as part of the medieval fortifications of Graz but was transformed into a clock tower in the 16th century. One of its most distinctive features is its unusual clock face, where the large hand marks the hours and the small hand marks the minutes—an inversion of the typical clock design, a feature that has remained unchanged since its installation.
- The tower, standing at approximately 28 meters, has survived numerous historical changes, including the demolition of most of the Schlossberg fortifications by Napoleon’s troops in 1809. Due to the deep affection of the local population for the Uhrturm, they paid a ransom to save it from destruction. Since then, the tower has remained a beloved symbol of the city's resilience and cultural heritage. Its wooden balconies, steep roof, and classic clock dials give it a fairy-tale charm, making it one of the most photographed sites in Graz.
- Visitors can reach the Clock Tower by climbing the Schlossberg stairs, a scenic yet steep pathway with over 260 steps that wind up the hill, or by taking the Schlossbergbahn funicular for a more relaxed ascent. Once at the top, the surrounding area offers beautifully landscaped gardens, walking paths, and open spaces perfect for taking in the cityscape. The nearby Glockenturm, or Bell Tower, adds to the historical ambiance of this elevated retreat.
